The whoas of a freelance webdesigner.
So about six months ago I decided to start actively trying to find freelance jobs to earn a little extra cash on the side. I started posting ads on craigslist. That sucked I quickly realized that there are hundreds of posts a day in the web design category and my ads never got noticed. So then i started responding to ads that people posted looking for web designers. I was responding to like 10 ads a day. No one ever replied back to me. Then after about a month or so i got a hit. This guy replied about a shopping cart system he wanted. I figured it couldn't be too hard to set one up.
So I went a met with the guy. I was going to buy a template from templatemontser.com and would be using the free zen-cart system. (Which i had played around with before so i was familiar with it.) He "wanted" a few changes to the template so i qouted him $500. I figured that was a bit low but I really needed it for my portfolio. Well a few changes turned in to a few more changes which turned into a few more changes and so on. So now here we are 4 months later and I am still working on shit for him. He ended up giving me a total of $900 for all the work I have done. Which is just a fraction of what i should have charged him for all the work i have done.
I am so burnt out on this project i don't know if i want to try for more projects in the future.

I totally agree with Jon - I think that his idea is great.
Also, don't get overwhelmed...this was only your first one. You just need to set hours, an actual payment plan, and rates. I think your life will be much easier if you do that!
